Every few months, fitness trends roll through like the tide. Detox teas, low-fat this, high-rep that. Each one promises quick results and a shortcut to the body you want. And each one fades away just as fast.
The truth? You probably already know it: there are no shortcuts. The people who build lasting fitness aren’t following fads... they’re sticking to principles that have stood the test of time.
At CrossFit, we use something called the Theoretical Hierarchy Of Development to keep us focused on what really matters. Think of it as a map, if you get lost in the noise, the pyramid shows you the way back to solid ground.
Everything starts with food. Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar.
Nutrition fuels your training.
It keeps your hormones balanced.
It’s the foundation for fat loss, muscle growth, and longevity.
No training plan can outwork a poor diet.
Once you’re eating well, you need an engine. Running, rowing, cycling, skipping... this is where you build stamina, endurance, and aerobic capacity.
This is why our classes always include conditioning pieces. A strong heart and lungs keep you healthier for decades.
Before you pick up a heavy barbell, you should master your own body. Pull-ups, push-ups, dips, handstands... these are where strength meets control.
Think of it this way: if you can’t control your own bodyweight, what business do you have loading it up with weights?
Now we layer strength on top of skill. Squats, deadlifts, cleans, snatches. These movements build raw power and functional strength. They’re not about building body parts in isolation... they’re about training the body to move as one powerful unit.
Only once the base is solid do we step into “sport.” This could be CrossFit competitions, footy, BJJ, or even chasing your kids around the backyard.
Sport is where you express your fitness... but without the layers underneath, the peak crumbles.
Here’s why this pyramid is worth remembering: it cuts through confusion. When you see another fad online, ask yourself: “Where does this sit on the pyramid?”
Does it improve my nutrition?
Does it build my engine?
Does it make me stronger or more capable?
If not, it’s probably a distraction.
When in doubt, come back to the fundamentals. They’re simple. They’re not flashy. But they work...and they last.
