The Skill That Beats Motivation Every Time

The Skill That Beats Motivation Every Time

November 24, 20253 min read

(For busy parents, adults with careers, and anyone who’s ever thought “I should train today… maybe later.”)

If you’ve ever had a day where the alarm goes off and the only thing you feel motivated to do is roll over and pretend you didn’t hear it… congratulations... you’re normal.

In fact, after coaching for two decades here in Brisbane, I can confidently say this:

The people who achieve the biggest transformations aren’t the most motivated.
They’re the most consistent.

And consistency has very little to do with how fired up you feel.

Motivation vs. the Real World

Motivation is fantastic when it’s there.
But it’s also… flaky.

It disappears the moment your toddler refuses to put shoes on.
It evaporates when work drops a surprise meeting on your calendar.
It fades fast when you’re exhausted and the couch is giving you “come hither” eyes.

So if motivation isn’t reliable (and it’s definitely not), what does work?

Consistency: The Real Superpower

There’s a great line from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits:

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

Your goals matter, but they don’t get you out of bed.
Your systems do.

And those systems don’t need to be complicated.

Enter: The 5-Minute Rule

One of the simplest and most powerful tools you can use (whether you train with us, used to train with us, or you’re still trying to figure out where to start) is something I call:

The 5-Minute Rule

If you’re stressed, tired, overwhelmed, or “not feeling it,” you do five minutes.

That’s it.

Not five minutes of perfection.
Just five minutes of anything that points you in the direction you want to go:

  • 5 minutes of squats while the kids brush their teeth

  • 5 minutes of walking around the backyard

  • 5 minutes of stretching while dinner’s cooking

  • 5 minutes to book your next training session

  • 5 minutes to fill your water bottle and pack gym clothes

The magic isn’t the five minutes.
The magic is that you showed up.

Because five minutes keeps your identity intact:

“I’m someone who trains.”
“I’m someone who looks after their health.”
“I’m someone who shows up.”

And people who keep that identity, even when life gets chaotic, are the ones who see long-term results.

Why This Matters (Especially Heading Into Summer)

Right now is when most people fall off.
Christmas parties begin.
The year feels long.
Work ramps up.
Kids’ schedules get ridiculous.

If your plan for “staying fit” depends on motivation, you’re in trouble.

But if your plan relies on the 5-Minute Rule, on tiny reps of showing up, you’ll carry your momentum into summer, stay healthier, and feel more in control.
